We are not trying to out-engrave MuseScore, and this page isn't affiliated with the MuseScore project — we'd rather make the honest case for where each tool fits.
StaffWeaver runs entirely in the browser — iPad, Android tablet, Chromebook, laptop, or desktop. There is no download, no updater, and no per-machine setup: sign in and your full editor and score library are just there. MuseScore Studio is desktop software you install per machine; StaffWeaver is the workflow for everywhere else.
The editor is touch-first from the ground up: magnetic drag-and-drop note entry that works as well with a finger as with a mouse, plus a slide-up piano keyboard for tap-to-enter input — two octaves on screen, arrows to shift the window, and a Chord toggle that stacks each key you tap onto the selected note instead of adding a new one. The same editor and the same score on an iPad, an Android tablet, a Chromebook, or a laptop — anything tablet-sized or larger, which is the smallest screen a full system of music fits on legibly.
Printing is done properly, not left to the browser to guess at. Page one starts with music instead of a wasted blank sheet, no system is chopped in half by a page break — each moves to the next page whole — and a tie or slur running from one system into the next, page break included, is engraved as two half-curves the way a copyist draws it rather than clipped at the paper edge. Print the whole score with its title and composer header, or switch to any single part and print that for the player.
Export any score from MuseScore Studio as MusicXML (.musicxml or compressed .mxl) and upload it from your StaffWeaver dashboard — free on every plan and permanently, up to 5 MB a file, parsed right in your browser, honest about anything it had to simplify. Instrument transpositions declared in the file are read correctly. It goes the other way too: the editor's Export button writes MusicXML 4.0 back out as .musicxml or .mxl — standards-conformant, checked against the official MusicXML 4.0 schema, in the interchange format MuseScore Studio imports. Both directions are free, client-side, and cost no credits.
Upload a PDF or a photo of printed sheet music (up to 15 MB and 10 pages) and StaffWeaver's AI scanner reads the notes and rhythms into an editable score, with Review Mode showing the original page side-by-side and flagging the measures it was unsure about. We publish the accuracy instead of implying it: on real published lead sheets, recognition scores a mean F1 of 0.34, against 0.825 on clean synthetic test pages. So a scan is an assistive first draft, not a transcription — and Review Mode is where you finish it, with one-click fixes like Make triplet and a per-measure Ask AI whose proposal you apply or dismiss. That is faster than retyping the page; it is not the same as scanning it and getting the piece.
Every score saves to your account in the cloud as you edit, with offline drafts that sync back when you reconnect. Open the same library from any browser you sign into — nothing lives on just one hard drive.
A built-in AI Score Chat can create a whole score from a prompt as well as edit an existing one: ask for a new piece and it makes it with your title, clef and time signature, opens it, and starts writing — 'Start a melody for me' is one of its own opening suggestions. From there, more than twenty score-editing tools: 'add a bass line,' 'harmonize the melody,' set dynamics, write lyrics or chord symbols, change key or meter mid-piece. Add measure and +4 extend the score as the music grows. Every change lands on the staff, one Undo away if the result isn't right. Charged per message in credits.
Start a new score from the instrument picker: choose a group — Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Marching Band, or an SATB, SSA or SAB choir — and the whole ensemble loads in that ensemble's own score order with section brackets already drawn, or build your own from the 34-instrument catalog grouped by family, with a count for each. Assign a B♭ trumpet, alto sax, or horn in F to a part later. Each part renders and prints in the written pitch the player reads, with correctly transposed key signatures, and a one-click concert-pitch view for the conductor. Switch to any single part to view and print just that player's music, with group brackets and grand-staff braces — from an ensemble group or an imported file — drawn at the left of every system. Playback always sounds in concert pitch.
Member seats on one account give a band, choir, or orchestra staff a shared score library at a flat published per-seat price — no per-machine licenses to track.

MuseScore Studio is free, open-source desktop software with decades of community refinement and engraving depth StaffWeaver does not try to match yet. If a permanent local install with publisher-grade engraving is what you want, MuseScore is a genuinely great choice — this page exists for the workflows it does not cover.
MuseScore Studio works completely offline. StaffWeaver keeps offline drafts and syncs them when you reconnect, but it is a web app — opening the editor and your cloud library needs a connection.
MuseScore Studio exports MIDI, MP3/WAV audio, and PDF. StaffWeaver exports MusicXML — .musicxml and compressed .mxl — and prints from the browser, but it writes no MIDI, audio, or PDF file of its own. If you need one, export MusicXML from StaffWeaver and produce it in MuseScore.
