A MuseScore alternative that runs in your browser

MuseScore Studio is excellent free, open-source notation software — and it is desktop software: you install it, your scores live on that machine, and editing happens where the install is. StaffWeaver is a music notation editor built for the other way of working: fully in the browser, touch-first on tablets, scores saved to your account, AI scanning for the paper library, and an AI chat that edits the score with you. If you have ever wanted MuseScore-style editing from a school Chromebook, a rehearsal iPad, or a borrowed laptop, this page is for you.

We are not trying to out-engrave MuseScore, and this page isn't affiliated with the MuseScore project — we'd rather make the honest case for where each tool fits.

What a browser-first workflow gets you

Write music without installing anything

StaffWeaver runs entirely in the browser — iPad, Android tablet, Chromebook, laptop, or desktop. There is no download, no updater, and no per-machine setup: sign in and your full editor and score library are just there. MuseScore Studio is desktop software you install per machine; StaffWeaver is the workflow for everywhere else.

Edit on a tablet, not just a desktop

The editor is touch-first from the ground up: magnetic drag-and-drop note entry that works as well with a finger as with a mouse, plus a slide-up piano keyboard for tap-to-enter input. The same editor and the same score on an iPad, an Android tablet, a Chromebook, or a laptop — anything tablet-sized or larger, which is the smallest screen a full system of music fits on legibly.

Bring your MuseScore scores with you

Export any score from MuseScore Studio as MusicXML (.musicxml or compressed .mxl) and upload it from your StaffWeaver dashboard — free on every plan, parsed right in your browser, honest about anything it had to simplify. Instrument transpositions declared in the file are read correctly.

Turn paper scores into editable ones

Upload a PDF or a photo of printed sheet music and StaffWeaver's AI scanner reads the notes and rhythms into an editable score — then Review Mode shows the original page side-by-side with the result and flags the measures optical recognition was unsure about.

A score library that follows you

Every score saves to your account in the cloud as you edit, with offline drafts that sync back when you reconnect. Open the same library from any browser you sign into — nothing lives on just one hard drive.

AI help when you are stuck

A built-in AI Score Chat edits the score for you: describe what you want — 'add a bass line,' 'harmonize the melody' — and the changes land on the staff, one Undo away if the result isn't right. Charged per message in credits.

Real band and orchestra parts

Assign a B♭ trumpet, alto sax, horn in F, and more from a 20-instrument catalog, and each part renders and prints in the written pitch the player reads, with correctly transposed key signatures — plus a one-click concert-pitch view for the conductor. Playback always sounds in concert pitch.

Seats for a whole group

Member seats on one account give a band, choir, or orchestra staff a shared score library at a flat published per-seat price — no per-machine licenses to track.

Where MuseScore still wins

An honest comparison cuts both ways — here is what we don't do.

MuseScore Studio is free forever, with deep engraving

MuseScore Studio is free, open-source desktop software with decades of community refinement and engraving depth StaffWeaver does not try to match yet. If a permanent local install with publisher-grade engraving is what you want, MuseScore is a genuinely great choice — this page exists for the workflows it does not cover.

Working fully offline

MuseScore Studio works completely offline. StaffWeaver keeps offline drafts and syncs them when you reconnect, but it is a web app — opening the editor and your cloud library needs a connection.

Exporting MusicXML back out

StaffWeaver imports MusicXML today but does not yet export it, so round-tripping a score back into MuseScore is not there yet. If two-way interchange is essential to your workflow, that is a real limitation to weigh.

Frequently asked questions

Is StaffWeaver free like MuseScore?
StaffWeaver has a real free tier — compose, import MusicXML, and save scores to your account with no credit card required. Paid plans ($49 per seat per year, plus credit-based AI options) add member seats and AI usage. MuseScore Studio, for its part, is free desktop software; the difference is where and how you work, not a paywall on basic editing.
Can I open my MuseScore (.mscz) files in StaffWeaver?
Not directly — StaffWeaver reads MusicXML, not the .mscz format. In MuseScore Studio use File → Export → MusicXML to save a .musicxml or .mxl copy, then upload it from your StaffWeaver dashboard. The import is free and runs in your browser.
Does StaffWeaver work on iPad, Android tablets, or phones?
iPad and Android tablets, yes — that is a large part of the point, along with Chromebooks, laptops, and desktops. The editor is touch-first and fully browser-based, with drag-and-drop and tap-to-enter piano input and no app store install. Phones, no: a phone screen cannot show enough of a system of music to place and read notes reliably, so score editing needs a tablet-sized screen or larger. You can still browse StaffWeaver, sign in, and manage your account and billing from a phone.
Can StaffWeaver scan sheet music like MuseScore’s PDF import?
Yes. Upload a PDF, PNG, or JPEG and the AI scanner turns it into an editable score, with a side-by-side Review Mode that flags uncertain measures against the original page — so you can trust, and quickly fix, what came out of the scan.
Does StaffWeaver have playback?
Yes — real-time playback with sampled instruments, per-part mute and solo, and a playhead that honors dynamics, hairpins, repeats, voltas, and D.C./D.S. navigation.
